Hawaiian Vacations
Hawaiian vacations, the ultimate destination! Why does it have to be so far away? But it's location is what makes it so desirable. After landing in Honolulu, if your destination is another island, you will have to catch a shuttle flight. These flights are used by the people to travel from one island to another for working and shopping. No fruits or vegetables can be brought in by visitors. By the time we landed on Kauai, it was dusk so we decided to eat before going to our resort. We ate at a Mexican Restaurant and sat on the outside porch. Surprisingly there were goats grazing next to us. We were awakened the next morning by a rooster. Thus began a wonderful time in paradise. Our resort was very good at arranging tours and a luau. Kauai known as the garden island has very mild temperatures, therefore we did not need air conditioning. It has been the site for many movies, those include Donavan's Reef with John Wayne, Blue Hawaii with Elvis Presley, and Jurassic Park. We had a boat tour down the river to the beautiful natural temple where Elvis was married in the movie. Then we took a helicopter ride that actually went inside the volcano that formed the island. The luau was held on one of the old plantations. There we did what all tourists do at least once, ate some poi. The color gray describes the taste perfectly. We did some snorkeling among the reefs and fortunately saw no sharks. That evening we sat on the beach listening to the waves crashing against the rocks while watching the glorious sunset. We spent a whole day exploring the island. We visited a state park that was on top of a mountain. The view of the Pacific Ocean and cliffs were spectacular. This is where the most rainfall is measured in the world. A lot of times you will be sunbathing while it is raining on top of the mountain. On the way home we took an extra day in Honolulu to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. (See picture below.) All Americans try to visit the memorial, it is very somber and quiet.
